The weekly pre-consumer food waste is dropped off at the Full Circle Compost facility in Carson City. These materials go through an intensive 10-week aerobic composting process which breaks down the materials into plant soluble nutrients known as humus (Compost is the old term, humus is the real deal compost!) The humus then is blended with other minerals and nutrients to make specialty soil amendments that can be used by consumers to grow their own awesome plants and gardens.
The “full circle” loop is taking the materials, turning them into awesome soil products, and then having the same business and community members use the compost products! That is the real deal “green” loop! Completing the loop is the next task at hand where participants in food waste composting will either support the composter by promoting the compost or using it on their own properties to show their customers what it really means to be “green”.
Turning organics into compost is green, but there is still an end product that must be used. As “green” advocates, take some time to get some compost and use it on your gardens, yards, and homes to break out of chemical fertilizers and into sustainable agriculture movement!
